Bilge pump, generator, both main engines, anchors, hydraulic rudder systems and the autopilot. Here is the Full Report: Ran plumbing to the main bilge pump & ran the generator which ran smoothly and the new sea water pump cooled the system as designed. We tested the hydraulic steering system, also. We moved the rudder port to starboard and back to port over 25 times. We also made sure that the steering unit operated correctly with the right pressure and 3 phase motor running smoothly. Turned on the autopilot to verify that the rudder indicator was aligning properly. Charlotte at the helm, Noah positioned at the stern looking over to see the rudder angle and I watched the gauges and listened to the motor and generator as Charlotte tested the steering. After verifying that the system was operating correctly, no loss in pressure, no leaks, no overheating, etc… Noah had the chance to test the steering. He counted about 21 revolutions hard over to hard over. Using the joystick, he tested it with both low and high speed settings. He enjoyed that! I had just woken up and ready for my midnight to 6:00am watch, when someone notified me that an engine was offline. We woke up the captain and notified him of the situation. He joined Mike and Jessie Fleming on the bridge, which were on watch at the time. I arrived at the engine room where Gerry and Brian attempted to start the engine and realized that fuel was not flowing to it. They traced the issue to a T coupling that sent the fuel to the generator and the starboard engine. We were perplexed that the generator was still running even though no fuel was flowing through the T coupling. To inspect it, we would need to stop the main generator, which would mean lights out and no power steering at the helm. This would make it difficult to continue finding the clogged fuel line. So, Gerry suggested that we bring the backup generator online, drop a work light and a fan down to the engine room for us to continue sorting out the issue. Jessie continued heading east with the port engine, keeping the ship stable while Mike and Brian fired up the secondary generator on the boat deck (top deck). Gerry plugged in the work light and fan while I shutdown the main generator. After taking the T coupling apart, I noticed that there was no fuel flowing out of the Racor fuel filter. I checked the bowls and they were clean. That meant that the clogged fuel line must be up stream. Gerry and Brian determined that a clogged fuel valve at the main day tank required a nut to be opened that has not been touched for at least the last 16 years. Needless to say, they were very cautious as they opened the nut to clear the debris. Once we put the fittings and hoses back together, we bled the air out of the starboard engine once again and successfully restarted the engine and main generator. Whew! Two hours has passed and Charlotte had taken the helm while Jessie and Mike were relieved of their duty and Capt. Ed and Chief Engineer Gerry returned to their quarters. Brian and I joined Charlotte at the wheelhouse for the remainder of our watch. ![](https://agmaritimemissions.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Sunset-with-clouds-1024x768.jpg) Wednesday at 4:00 in the morning, when Charlotte’s and Brian’s watch ended and Capt. Ed and Chatelier’s watch began, the 5 foot seas at 5 second intervals began pounding the ship as forecasted. The ship was rocking and rolling as each wave passed. Noah had awoken an hour earlier because while sleeping in the V-Berth (the most forward stateroom of the vessel) he felt the ship rising and falling giving him the sensation of negative G’s. Later, Ellie had joined him on the back deck as both of them were sea sick. Charlotte sleeping in the main salon was also sea sick. Everyone was fine until now. As Capt. Ed and Chatelier attempted to maintain the course to Mazatlán, due east, the ship would pitch and yaw as the high waves would slam our port side and the ship would right itself through the trough of the wave. Mike had the foresight to screw down the blocks to keep the dining room table from being hurled across the room. Jessie had fastened down any loose items the night before. I had two more hours until my Engineering watch ended. When I was doing my rounds, I noticed that the strap that secured the tool racks to the wall had severed, below deck aft of the engine room. After 15 minutes of re-securing the tie down, Chatelier came down to check on me. I walked over to greet her when a huge wave picked up the ship on the port side and threw the tools and huge fire extinguisher from the shelf, opposite of the tool racks, onto the floor where I was just standing. Soon, another wave hits and the content in the cabinets of my office shoots out onto the floor. Then another hits, waking Brian from his bunk as the content in the drawers of his quarters flew out and showered him in the face. It also threw Charlotte across the main salon out of the couch onto the ottoman, breaking my mother’s antique wooden table and rolling onto Gerry who was sleeping in the other couch across the room. Fortunately, Charlotte didn’t hurt herself but sustained a bruise on her leg from crushing the table. Jessie and Mike were asleep until a wave splashed onto the foredeck and water poured into the air vent and down into their cabin, splashing Mike in the face. He came out of the cabin looking for a towel and saw the floor all covered with debris from the shelves. When Chatelier returned to the helm after helping me sort out the mess, she changed course into the waves, north east for a much smoother ride. Soon, it was Gerry, Mike, and Jessie’s watch. Mike calculated our progress and realized that we only traveled 2 miles in the last hour. Brian and Mike estimated that at best, it would take over 50 hours to reach Mazatlán. Gerry and I calculated that we had about 30 to 40 hours of fuel. If the seas were calm as we’ve seen it for the past 10 days, we would have had enough fuel, with about 10 hours of margin. However, the forecast was about the same on Thursday and on Friday it would be calmer with 1 foot seas at longer intervals. Capt. Ed listened to the crew and decided that we need to return to Cabo San Lucas to refuel. Rested on Thursday and refueled on Friday morning and attempted the crossing again. This time, the seas were calm. On Saturday around 1:00pm, 2/11/17, we arrived at Mazatlán bay, cruised by the YWAM campus then anchored off the islands nearby for the evening. Jessie, Ellie and Noah kayaked out to the island and returned to the ship for a nice meal on the back deck with the crew. We started our 2 hour anchor watches that evening. On Sunday morning, 2/12/17, after waiting for the fog to clear, we raised the anchor. Making our way to the marina, a panga boat shows up on our starboard beam with a video and photography crew welcoming us to Mazatlán after our 14 day voyage. Ed Payne’s report, a winter storm forming off the Pacific Northwest, expected to arrive in the Bay Area around Wednesday, generated following seas and significant tail winds that pushed us along at over 8 knots, with a maximum speed of 12 knots. Passing Monterey Bay the first evening, Pismo Beach the second evening, Catalina Island and Newport Beach the third evening, reaching Ensenada, Mexico by the fourth evening. ![](https://agmaritimemissions.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Tracker-Ensenada.jpg) The crew quickly settled into a routine of 4 hours on watch and 8 hours off. As we approached Ensenada, we noticed that the starboard engine was consuming 3 times more oil than usual. So, we contacted our “Designated Person Ashore” aka DPA, Ikaika Hobbs, Director of YWAMShips Mazatlan via our “inReach Explorer” satellite device, to assist us with finding a marina and purchasing more oil in Ensenada. Within a couple of hours, he had secured a berth and arranged a driver from a commercial oil company to meet us when we arrived the next day, Thursday 2/2/17. We had a wonderful evening in town. Ensenada is a “Port of Entry”, probably the easiest place for yatistas to arrive and depart Mexico. On Friday morning, 2/3/17, we went to the Centro Integral de Servicios to obtain our Mexican tourist visas, good for 6 months and paid for the Temporary Import Permit for the ship, good for 10 years, in one easy visit. There were 3 governmental agencies that we needed to clear. What took 2 hours in Ensenada would have taken several days in Mazatlán because Ensenada is more prepared to handle the high volume of yatistas from the US. Later that afternoon, we casted off and departed for Mazatlán. ![](https://agmaritimemissions.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Sunset-through-porthole-300x225.jpg) ![](https://agmaritimemissions.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Sunset-with-clouds-300x225.jpg) The storm that arrived in Northern California the previous day had sent 4 to 5 foot swells down the coast which caught up with us, as we exited Ensenada. As we powered through the swells, the ship rocked up and down causing the fuel tanks to slosh around which stirred up the algae that grew in the day tank for the past decade. The algae began to clog up the Racor fuel filters. By design, the fuel filters are hot swappable, meaning, we can switch fuel filters while underway without disrupting the fuel flow to the engines. The fuel contaminates were so bad that we had to switch and clean the fuel filters every 30 minutes. Gerry and I were very busy during this time. Three hours had passed since we departed Ensenada when a huge swell rocked the ship and both engines shutdown at the same time. Around 5:45pm, we were dead in the water as the waves continued to hit. Capt. Ed, Noah and Chatelier just began their watch when the engine stopped. Gerry and I were sitting on the couch in the main salon as we watched the window fill with sky then water then quietness except for the generator. We quickly walked to the engine room to assess the situation. We discovered that both engines were starved of fuel and the generator began to sputter. I began to clean out the clogged fuel filters when I realized that the Racor canisters did not have fuel in it from the last time I cleaned out the bowl. So, I quickly switch to the other working filter sending fuel to the generator to continue working. Next, we attempted to start the engines. After several attempts, they wouldn’t start. I became concerned that we might drain the batteries so we stopped and reassessed the situation. Brian came down to the engine room to help Gerry bleed the air out of the fuel lines and tried restarting the engines but no luck. After looking the system over again, Brian discovered a third bleed valve in the fuel injector pump module. Miraculously, this made the ride more stable and we were able to work in the engine room more comfortably. Thirty minutes into the problem, Capt. Ed contacted the US Coast Guard San Diego Sector notifying them of our situation and to standby for assistance. Drifting for an hour towards the rocks, it became apparent that help would be required to avoid them. Thankfully, the engines came back online, we resumed our course and we had several days of dependable propulsion. After a couple of days, I found the sources of the oil leaks and rectified the situation. Our journey south to Cabo San Lucas continued without incident, passing Punta Santa Rosalia by Saturday evening 2/4/17, passing Bahía De Ballenas by Sunday evening, passing Isla Santa Margarita by Monday evening, then passing Cabo San Lucas by Tuesday evening 2/7/17. Alameda was our first choice but insurance requirements stood in the way. The insurance company required a haul out to give us coverage and the shipyard required insurance to haul us out. Miraculously the insurance came through and our desired shipyard became available within three days. Thanks so much for your prayers and support! On Friday, July 8th, Amazing Grace officially dry docked. In addition to planned maintenance, we noticed during the shakedown cruise that the 3 x 1000 gallon fuel tanks needed to be cleaned and serviced to ensure that in rough seas no contaminates will plug up the fuel filters and shutdown the engines. After meeting with the shipyard about this, the quote for this service is an additional $24,000 due to California state and federal requirements to properly enter the fuel tanks and dispose of contaminants. Installing reinforced steel plates based on ultrasonic report is an increase of approximately $6,000. In the summer of 2000, Charlotte and I received a vision to serve the Lord with ships. He gave us a specific ship that we learned to prepare and operate called “Amazing Grace”, a 100 ft steel hull trawler. The Lord gave us clear direction to sell our house and buy the ship. That summer, as we looked through a “*Yachts For Sale”* magazine, we spotted this 100 foot vessel. We prayed and asked the Lord as to what we should do. That evening, as we read our devotional “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers, the Bible verse said “Get into the ship and go to the other side.” The next day, after having dinner, we stepped into the backyard to watch the beautiful sunset. A cloud formed and it looked like the face of Jesus. I didn’t want to say it. I looked at Charlotte and she nodded with acknowledgment then Chatelier, our 4 year old daughter at the time, blurts out, “Look Dad! That looks like the face of Jesus!” as she points to the clouds. Charlotte and I with joy thanked God for the two confirmations. Reading the devotional later that evening, the Bible verse said “You will see Jesus in the clouds….” We received 3 confirmations just as I asked for. So we flew up to Seattle to survey the ship. When we returned, we asked God how much we should sell the house for? He gave us a price two times more than we purchased it 5 years earlier. We spoke to our realtor, although reluctant, listed it for that price. Thinking that it was a crazy idea, I ask God for another confirmation that the house sells in 1 day. Within four hours after listing it on the market, our realtor received an offer for the asking price and we accepted. Thirty days later we closed on the house, purchased this ship in cash and renamed the motor vessel to “Amazing Grace.” Fourteen years later, Chatelier attends a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Bible university called University of the Nations in Kona, Hawaii, a Christian missions organization. She enrolls in a bible course scheduled to be on the main campus; however, her class and dormitory relocated to a newly acquired facility next to the Kona harbor. She sends us a picture with her name labeled on her door “Chatelier Ebio, YWAM Ships.” After finishing the quarter, she participated on YWAM Ships’ maiden voyage to Micronesia’s Line Islands, about 1000 miles south of Hawaii, where she served as crew and bible teacher for 2.5 months. Since then, Charlotte and I prayed for clarity about how our ship, Amazing Grace, can support YWAM Ships’ mission to serve the isolated, poor and the needy. God answered with YWAM Mazatlán. They have been praying for a ship for the last 5 years to serve in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Charlotte and I met with the leaders and after much praying, we agreed to support their cause. In 2014, Brent and Heather Madsen and Ikaika Hobbs, leaders of YWAM Mazatlán, visited us in Bethel Island, California. We discussed their vision and showed them our vessel to see how we can assist in achieving our mutual goals in spreading the gospel by providing for the spiritual and physical needs of the people. The Amazing Grace sleeps 24 with 5 toilets and 4 showers. The main deck is composed of a main salon, galley (kitchen), dining salon, and Fire Equipment locker. The main salon serves as our meeting room, hangout space, worship area, and general community gatherings. Below the main deck is our sleeping quarters which are divided into several sleeping areas for all of our sailing crew, medical professionals, and general volunteers. Participants will learn essential skills such as handwashing, dental hygiene, and wound care through interactive stations, staffed by your team to demonstrate and reinforce these valuable lessons. One popular activity? Scrubbing finger paint from hands! On Day 2, we bring Ephesians 6:10-17 to life through skits and games. This program is structured like a Sunday school lesson, teaching the various components of God’s armor and their significance through playful skits and projects, including the “Pin on the Full Armor” game, which maintains a biblical focus while echoing the charm of the classic “Pin the tail on the donkey” version. Your team, comprising of 6-15 volunteers, including teachers and support staff, will collaborate with local members to deliver our health education lessons, while also providing Home Health kits that contain essential hygiene and first aid supplies. ### **Disease Prevention Outreach** The Amazing Grace Maritime Missions Disease Prevention program aims to educate both adults and children about the causes of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, along with effective prevention strategies with a Health Fair & Adult Health Screenings. During one health fair lessons called “How much does soda weigh?” Your team will have attendees lift bags filled with the weight of sugar you’d ingest in a year from drinking one soda a day. Turns out it is approximately 31 pounds of sugar a year! Medical personnel will conduct disease prevention testing for adults, including health screenings that utilize body mass index, glucose A1C levels, and blood pressure assessments. Participants receive a confidential one-on-one health consultation that includes screening results, personalized health education, and prayer. We typically form teams of 6-12 members, comprising 3-4 medical professionals who help with testing & consultation and general volunteers who teach and facilitate the clinic and health fair. ### **Dulce Dental Outreach** This program delivers vital dental care to underserved communities. Our teams, made up of dentists, hygienists, students, and general volunteers, provides free dental services and collaborate with schools in the village to enhance prevention and oral health education. Our Outreaches transforms lives, one smile at a time. We have 4-6 very basic, reclining “camp chairs”, for patients. Specific dental tools & equipment will be coordinated with your team. We work alongside and support local Mexican licensed dentists. For $5/month our Dulce Dental Sponsorship program provides follow-up preventative dental care including exams, X-rays, & cleanings with a local dentist. ### **Dulce Dental Sponsorship Program** Our goal is to develop dental hygiene habits to at-risk youth. For $5/month our Dulce Dental Sponsorship program provides follow-up preventative dental care including exams, X-rays, & cleanings with a local dentist twice a year. AGMM partners with a local dentist who provides the above services at a discount and we sponsor at-risk youth to receive dental care through our ministry partners who schedules and takes them to their dental appointments. If the dentist discovers that more dental services are needed, our ministry partner consults with the child’s parents to contribute funds for the extra fees. During the Armor of God outreach with Amanda and Merab from Academia Ancla, the local dentist Dr. Iris, we taught children about preventative health—simple lessons that will ripple through their families and community for years. We ended our time on the water, surrounded by breathtaking sunrises and sunsets aboard the catamaran Redemption. We left humbled and inspired by those who’ve stepped away from traditional jobs to serve God’s people. When you come to serve with us, something very unexpected will happen. Everyone in your team will leave Mexico a different person. Stepping out of your comfort zone into a cross-cultural situation can have a life-long impact on an individual. God will use your time in Mexico to draw your students closer to Himself. A typical team consists of 50% medical personnel and 50% general volunteers. [Contact us](/contact) for prices and dates Costs include the following: - In Country Travel - Food - Housing Aboard Amazing Grace Communal living with other volunteers such as staff and crew. Costs does not include air flights to where the ship is located. **Primary Health Care Clinics (PHC)** Mobile teams leave the vessel each morning on inflatable zodiacs and conduct clinic activity ashore returning to the vessel for dinner and overnight accommodations. Depending on the location the clinics may be running medical, optical, dental, community health education (CHE) and midwife clinics. **Dental** Dental work is done on the AMAZING GRACE as well as mobile dental units we take ashore. The most common procedure is pulling teeth and relieving people of immediate discomfort and infection. We also work with local dentists here in Mazatlan to provide long-term preventative training once the immediate needs have been met. **Optical** Optical clinics are held ashore as well. Thousands of pairs of collated glasses collected throughout the year are dispensed at the optical clinic. These enable children to read the black board at school and continue their education. Simple glasses that were previously sitting in drawers or discarded become an amazing gift for many. **Community Health Education** Education of just a few mothers and grandmothers in the area of basic health means they become trainers themselves when they return home. This is one of our most multipliable ministries – training trainers! We’re empowering families with practical skills in health, hygiene, and sanitation — essential knowledge that helps prevent illness and brings greater dignity and well-being to their lives. Omega, Director of Racham, and her team provide education, good nutrition, parenting classes, and spiritual growth for at risk youth and their families in an impoverished community in Mazatlán. To make this program truly effective, we need clean portable toilets paired with handwashing stations. These will allow participants to see and practice real hygiene techniques right on the spot — from proper handwashing to overall sanitation habits. We’ve found a rental option where $232 will cover the units with sinks for the full day, including delivery and pickup. This small investment will turn our teaching into a powerful, interactive experience that sticks with people long after the event. Your support of any amount will help us provide this practical, life-giving education.
